About the project
The transition towards electric mobility offers Ethiopia not only an opportunity to improve efficiency and transform the transport sector but also addresses several issues that the country is currently grappling with. The concerns regarding energy security and rising current account deficit (CAD) on account of rising fossil fuel imports can be addressed with the uptake of electric mobility.
Ethiopia has a clear intention of multiplying its generation from renewable energy (RE) sources which are inherently intermittent. Several reports suggest that Electric vehicles (EV) can complement the intermittent nature of power generated from RE by absorbing power at off-peak hours. The batteries in EVs can act as ancillary services for the proliferation of distributed generation resources (DER).Apart from supporting RE generation, EVs with a feasible vehicle to grid technology can act as a dynamic storage media and can enhance the grid resilience through ancillary market. This can reduce the burden of exchequer to create static energy storage systems, especially in distribution networks, to support proliferation of grid connected roof top solar and DERs.
The new ecosystem offers Ethiopia the opportunities to become a leader in domestic manufacturing and job relation as electric mobility is still in nascent stages in many advanced markets around the globe. Further, transition to electric mobility can undoubtedly help Ethiopia achieve its global commitments of reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as Ethiopia was the first developing country which submitted its NDC (Nationally Determined Contribution) at the UNFCCC (United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) and therefore takes a leading role in climate policy of the most vulnerable countries to climate change. However, to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in Ethiopia, a lot of preparation needs to be done so that the market grows in a self-sustainable manner with minimal federal support and interventions.
Our company Utopia Technology Ltd established to promote sustainable green economy & technologies in Ethiopia, is transforming the way energy is consumed by running several Projects to efficiently use Renewable energy and ensure its conservation by introducing zero emission and green mobility innovative projects. UTOPIA-PLC , in consultation with the Ministry of Energy (MoE), Ministery of Transport ( MoT) and Government of Ethiopia (GoE), took an initiative to promote adaption Electric Vehicles(EV) and proliferation of Electric Vehicle charging Station /infrastructure (EVCS) integrated with renewable energy sources , which is considered an essential spoke without which the wheel of electric mobility cannot roll. Subsequently, it has been concluded that charging infrastructure (both fast and slow) needs to come first to ensure a smooth transition for end-users, especially when range anxiety and charging time are considered major barriers to adoption.
In addition, Utopia Technology will launch a Green mobility/ EV-Taxis services , with an ambition to increase the acceptance of electric mobility through the introduction of electric taxis in various cities throughout Ethiopia and Africa. We believe that EV-taxis are a suitable way to make people more aware of the advantages of electric mobility and to create thousands of Jobs, as it is a new and a disruptive Project .

The technology for electric cars is mature and the prices have come to a reasonable level. Despite these facts, the penetration of electric cars is still at a very low level. We want to change this, by proving that electric cars even in a high intensive use like taxis are a preferred choice and work well over time. A major concerns is still the range anxiety of electric cars, but with a network of fast charging stations this problem can be solved.
Carbon emissions are a critical factor for climate change. Hereby personal transportation is a main driver for the increase of carbon emissions. By replacing conventional cars with electric cars, which are exclusively charged with renewable energy, these can be reduced. As a first step it is important to make more people accustomed with electric mobility and reduce their concerns like range anxiety. Using taxis can be a very efficient way in this regard. The entrance barrier is rather low and the taxi driver can act as a ambassador for electric mobility. Currently, due to the energy transition the whole system needs to reflect the new requirements. Electric cars can play a vital role hereby, by acting potentially as a huge energy storage.
Utopia Technology will launch a Green mobility/ EV-Taxis services, with an ambition to increase the acceptance of electric mobility through the introduction of electric taxis in various cities throughout Ethiopia and Africa. We believe that EV-taxis are a suitable way to make people more aware of the advantages of electric mobility and to create thousands of Jobs, as it is a new and a disruptive Project. The idea is to work together with different parties through a multi-stakeholder approach, including taxi associations, utilities, government officials, and financial organization.

Our company Utopia Technology PLC is working on many innovative projects, including promoting, supplying, and assembling of Zero Emission-Electric Vehicle (EV) and developing of Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) integrated with Renewable Solar Energy and introduce the first of it’s kind Green Mobility/EV-Taxis project in East Africa – Ethiopia.
All the three Projects namely; Utopia EV Supply, Utopia EV Charging Station and Utopia Green Mobility/EV-Taxi are Disruptive innovations that will create a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network. As a result will create thousands of job by promoting adaption of Electric Vehicles (EV) and the proliferation of Electric Vehicle charging stations/infrastructure (EVCS) integrated with renewable energy sources, which is considered as an essential spoke without which the wheel of electric mobility cannot roll. Subsequently, it has been concluded that charging infrastructure (both fast and slow) needs to come first to ensure a smooth transition for end-users, especially when range anxiety and charging time are considered major barriers to adoption.
Despite the huge electricity shortage in our country, Our entire project will be powered by the electric energy which will be generated from Green, renewable and sustainable energy sources, like Solar (PV) system and Power wind. Not only we will generate renewable energy to our projects (EV), but all so support the Government by releasing overflow power to the National Grid.
After successfully completing the first phases of the EV charging station project, we are going to import and assemble thousands of zero emission Electric Vehicles. We are going to promote the adaption of affordable, smart and environment friendly EVs in partnership with notable financial intuitions, who is going to provide a long-term lone services for EV customers. We are also working with many governmental institutions to introduce Green mobility/ EV-Taxi service, which will create thousands of job and tackle the burning public transportation shortage problem in the city.
